Summary: What was love to her, anyway?

What was love?

How far would she go to be with the one that she cared about?

Those were questions that everyone had a different answer for and, in the end, each person had to come up with their own. Unfortunately, those were answers that Lina still didn't didn't feel she had. Or, at least, none that she tended to agree with no matter what state of mind her mood swung into, which tended to be often and myriad.

When she was happy, she thought love was a wonderful thing. When she wasn't, she thought love was...well, something a lot less than that.

Her mother used to say that love was about compromise, something that Lina always found hard to do. Her childhood friends that she played with before leaving home for a life of adventuring had dreamt of girly dreams of romance and handsome princes on white horses rescuing them from danger, but Lina had always preferred to do her own saving. And her sister used to say...not much about it other than to order her to never confuse love and romance.

So, then, what was romance?

Was it being warmly embraced and suddenly filled with love and the sensation of flying? Was it like the romantic dreams of girls, the fairytales, the stories? Was it having a love so strong that the prince would sacrifice himself for the sake of his princess, or the other way around? Was it sweet kisses in the moonlight or a gift of flowers given for no other reason other than to see the other person smile? Was it missing that person's presence by her side so much when it was empty or seeing that person's figure whenever she closed her eyes?

If it was, then she'd had all that.

All of it - including the sacrifice.

And now she was alone again.

She looked up and the vision of a starry sky blurred. Perhaps a foggy haze was rolling in because she wasn't crying, that wasn't her style. Crocodile tears, maybe, but not real ones.

No, not her.

She was strong. She wasn't raised to run away, to turn back from a course she was set on. She would not be afraid.

Shaking her head, she stopped lying about and got to her feet. Cupping her hands, she rose them above her head and arched her back, enjoying the sensation as her body stretched. Feeling better, her lips quirked in a tiny smile as she tilted her head backwards to stare up at the starry canopy above her.

Nature all around her with the moon and stars watching over her like heaven's eyes, she felt like the only human on earth. It was a peaceful solitude that encompassed her as the grass crunched beneath her footsteps and the wind caressed her cheeks while the sound of leaves rustling in the breeze echoed after her like the rushing of a thousand birds flapping their wings.

Still staring up at the sky, she stopped when the grass did. Taking a breath of the crips sweetness of night air, she let it out with a sigh. She readied herself, bending her knees slightly at the edge of the cliff, and then she leapt

And, for a moment, she flew.
